Black Mountain Side

It occurs to me that some of you more sociable types may be having a Halloween party. Ignoring the fact that you haven't invited me, if you need a soundtrack that really shivers the spine, might I suggest 'Black Goat Of The Woods' by Black Mountain Transmitter? Originally released on cassette on 31st October, 2009, it's a terrifying recording that my wife always makes me listen to on the headphones, thereby ensuring that I get really frightened on my own.

It's still out there on physical formats, people, and you can 'download' their back catalogue here. . Their new album 'Playing With Dead Things' is, appropriately, out today.

Plekzy Music

Bristol based radiophonic futurists Ekoplekz have a new ep out on Public Information, the boffins who brought us 'Electronics Without Tears' a scant few weeks ago. It's a hugely atmospheric, occasionally scary recording available on very limited edition vinyl or as a download, and it comes highly recommended for anyone with functioning ears and a scintilla of taste. Electronics Without Tears

Regular readers will know of my affection for all things Radiophonic / Electronic / Concrete, as well as my admiration for previously unsung genius, F.C Judd. Public Information have put together the first official compilation of Fred's groundbreaking work and you can get it here along with all the details you need (I found out more about Judd's work on my first visit than I'd learned over the last ten years on my own).





This is apparently the first instalment of a major retrospective, which is excellent news. 

Instrumental Forms Are Eliminated

Two of my proudest posessions are two little 7" ep's on the Castle label, released in the early 1960's. Marked 'copyright free to amateur users only' they both contain fascinating electronic tracks put together by currently unsung British wireless and sound recording genius F.C Judd.

'Electronic Themes and Music Concrete' (there's a little accent over the first 'e' in concrete that I can't type) is the second of the little records and is 'mainly intended for effects purposes in stage drama, recording and film soundtracks'. The rest of the sleevenotes are equally informative: 'nothing pertaining to electronic music and musique concrete is analogous to conventional music performed with traditional musical instruments. Electronic music and musique concrete may therefore seem extremely complex and without recognizable order, for instrumental forms are eliminated; timbre, functional harmony and symmetrical rhythms are suspended'. So now you know.

Here's a sub ten minute mix of the four tracks: 'Delta F', 'Study In Sinetones', 'Sound Object' and 'Montage'. The quality of the recording is 'much loved', because it is.
