Peter Wyngarde runs the gamut from light-hearted cynicism to utter revulsion as German newspaper editor Werner Loder in the 1962 Armchair Theatre production 'Night Conspirators'. He gives an powerful, serious performance, as might befit a drama about the unexpected and, in Werner Loder's case, desperately unwanted, return of an aged Adolf Hitler to Germany.
It bears repeating: Peter Wyngarde was a very fine actor, and he should be as well known for that as his moustache, cuban heels, perm and private life. The Island would be a much duller place without him.
undoubtedly, with regard to his thespian thews, but weirdly in these screen grabs of Wynners, I find myself reminded of nothing so much as the 'made-up', post curse (?), Calibos character in Harryhausen's original 'clash of the titans'.
ReplyDeletebit unfair on Pete (and possibly myself) - so we'll put it down to Screen Format Anomalies, I guess.
He does have a big face, Marc, I agree - great tool for an actor!
DeleteAs I recall, Calibos was wearing that aggrieved expression because some young man had grabbed his ring.
ReplyDeleteThe similarities continue..
and the aussie ladies (at least) certainly thought pete had a great tool. So I guess he has the last laugh anyhow.
DeleteI often encountered him at the late lamented El Sombrero gay club (AKA Yours or Mine) in High Street Kensington, back in the early 1970s. I also encountered him in the same era at the (slightly) notorious Holland Walk cruising ground in Holland Park, but over those latter escapades I shall draw a discreet veil.
