The Two Faces Of Evil

'The Two Faces Of Evil' is a collaboration between myself and the notorious Fearlono of 'Cottage Of Electric Hell' and 'Mounds & Circles' fame. From the moment I first heard his warped audio mixes, I knew that this was a ghost train with a groovy guard and a gravy cargo and I wanted to stand on the footplate and help him shovel shit into the firebox.

We met for real, no shit, in person in Sheffield last year and got on like an orphanage on fire, so much so that for a few days afterwards I used to look at my wife and think 'you know, you don't really understand me at all'. Our bromance (there's nothing sexual, just touching) has culminated in this dark and fiendish mix of music, atmospheres and assorted spooky stuff.

Fearlono, of course, tells a far stranger and more disturbing origin story and, to be honest, he might be right. The fact is, every time I think about how the mix came about I black out, as if something within me doesn't want me to remember...my nose is bleeding as I type this.

Bangs

I'm back, metaphorically wielding a big fuck off gun loaded with facts, opinion and stuff I just blatantly made up. And I'm pointing it at you, dear reader*. In a good way.

Lots of amazing things to come, but, to start with, here's a little mix I made for you in the hope that you might like me, maybe go out with me one evening. No pressure. I call it 'Don't Blow Your Cool' but, if you can think of a better title, go for it.

The track listing goes like this:

001 Twiggy: Beautiful Dreams / 002 The Caravelles: Don't Blow Your Cool / 003 The Focus Group: Swinging Phantom / 004 Shaun Harris: Today's a Day / 005 Alan Hawkshaw: Space Probe / 006 Mikr Rozakis: Phantom Visions / 007 Sun Ra and his Intergalactic Infinity Arkestra: Dance of the Living Image / 008 Lord Rockingham's XI: Fried Onions / 009 Moe Koffman: Comin' Home, Baby / Esa Pethman: Lullaby / Anthony Newley: My Clair De Lune**

*   That's not a picture of me, by the way. It's Nelly Benedetti in 'Le Peau Douce'.
** The Anthony Newley obsession is no better, I'm afraid, but thanks for asking.

Squeals

I have made a mix for you all. It has no theme, and is very basically some music I have been listening to sprinkled with the odd unrelated sample. I call it ‘You’re Not Alone’. And you’re not, you’re really not.

The track listing is as follows:

001 The John Barry Seven: Bees Knees / 002 Anthony Newley: Bee-Bom / 003 Jose James: Equinox / 004 Francois de Roubaix: Tempo / 005 Roger Roger: Roger Rhythm Number One / 006 The Pyramids: Out Of Limits / 007 Sounds Incorporated: Bullets / 008 The Welfare State and White Noise: Silence Is Requested / 009 Michael Garrick: Return of An Angel / 010 Jack Arel and Jean-Claude Petit: Psychedelic Portrait / 011 Ivor Cutler: Cockadoodledon't
The accompanying image is from the 1970 Francois Truffaut film ‘L’enfant Sauvage’. I don’t just watch British horror and sci fi film and TV, you know. But I mostly do.

Sand Trap

I've seen public information film 'Broken Glass' hundreds of times in the last 38 years - last year alone, for instance, I spent hours watching it over and over as I prepared this very special U-W 'remix' of it, and I can confirm that, however familiar it seems, the last second always makes you feel sick.

The Way In

The first day of Summer is officially on June 21st, but calendars are for squares, man, I say it's the first of June, even if its snowing. So, in celebration of the sticky weather soon to delight, then annoy, then grind us down, here's a mix I call 'The Door Into Summer'.

It's a mixed bag, but it's all decent stuff. At least one of the tracks has appeared in a previous mix I did elsewhere, but I'm very much a flow kind of mixer, and the whole thing just didn't seem right without it. Anyway, I've said too much...

Tracks:

001 Music De Wolfe: Country Haze 002 Bitter-Sweet: What A Lonely Way To Start The Summertime 003 Margo Guryan: Sun 004 Melodic Energy Commission: The Doorway Into Summer 005 Lalo Schifrin: Bees, Wasps & Mayflies 006 Francois de Roubaix: La Canal Gele 007 Hoyt Axton: The Sunshine Fields Of Love 008 Tully: I Feel The Sun 009 Dick Mills: Seascape 010 Ars Nova: Walk On The Sand 011 Ora: Seashore 012 Friends: One Sweet Day 013 The Advisory Circle: Sundial 014 Blur: Essex Dogs 015 Greta Ann: Sadness Hides The Sun

Burning Bright

'Earthbound' is my second new long mix of the year, and comes from the same well of inspiration as 'Earthborn' from a couple of weeks ago, i.e. grey mornings, low sun, dirty windows, trudging about and staving off attacks from piles of leaves.

Tracks:

001 Brian Bennett: Earthborn 002 Tangerine Dream: Fauni Gena 003 Ramases: Earth People 004 Nucleus: Stonescape 005 Michael Garrick: Thanksgiving Dance 006 Minotaur Shock: Primary 007 Boards of Canada: Oirectine 008 Oberon: Time Past, Time Come 009 Marianne Faithfull: Jabberwock 010 Les Reed: Dawn Idyll 011 Delired Cameleon Family: Le Boeuf

Featured songbirds include the Greenfinch, the Crosshatch, the Field Fare and the occupants of the Berlin Zoo Aviary in late 1972.

What Dread Hand

First mix of 2011, and the first to be hosted on 'Island Of Terror'. How exciting.

'Earthborn' was inspired by the first twangs of Spring, but is more about the arse end of Winter, the muddy, chilly, damp and dreary that sticks around and makes everyone vaguely depressed until the beginning of April when the sun starts to break through. I don't mind that sort of weather at all, of course, I'm a vaguely depressed kind of person: I like drizzle better than sizzle.

Tracks:

001 Boards Of Canada: Wildlife Analysis 002 Talk Talk: The Rainbow (Edit) 003 Evan Parker: Birds One 004 Norma Winstone: Perkins Landing 005 Pentangle: In Your Mind 006 The Memory Band: Once Bittern 007 Basil Kirchin: Once Upon A Time (Excerpt) 008 Spontaneous Music Ensemble: Oliv II (Excerpt) 009 Belbury Poly: Cool Air

It's all mixed together with some additional sound effects, nature recordings and the odd bit of sonic manipulation, as well as some dialogue samples from, well, you'll never guess...
